Kanha City Guide

Introduction to Kanha: The Kanha National park is one of the many fascinating natural destinations of Madhya Pradesh. It was registered as a national park in the year 1955 and dedicated to the preservation of endangered and rare species. The picturesque Park area, its innumerable wildlife and wonderful flora make it a favourite destination of the nature lovers. According to the records, the Kanha National Park is also the sole inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling/’s unforgettable classic The Jungle Book. The romance, as depicted in the book, can still be seen in the park here. The grassy meadows, thick greens, chirping of endless number of birds and grazing of the swamp deer, sambhar and chital will definitely make you forget the world outside.

Sightseeing:  Kanha boasts of about 22 species of mammals. Some of the inhabitants of this park are the gaur, the largest of the world's cattle; the sambar, the largest Indian deer; and the chausingha, the only four-horned antelope in the world. Other frequent visitors include the Nilgai antelope, the sloth bear, the dhole, or Indian wild dog, and an occasional panther. Some 200 species of birds inhabit the park, that include the cattle egret, black ibis, hawk eagle, and the red-wattled lapwing. Shravantal is an old, earthenbound tank in the central Kanha meadows, which happens to be an important watering hole, for a large number of water fowl in winter. Bamni Dadar, known as Sunset Point, is the most beautiful section of the park, and the view of the sunset from this spot is absolutely mesmerising. Quite a few animals can be sighted around this area which include the sambar, gaur, the four-horned antelope and the barking deer. The barasingha, or blackbuck, is undoubtedly the jewel of Kanha, and drastic steps have been taken to rescue it from complete extinction. Barasinghas exist almost totally on grass, and tall grass meadows are essential for their security. But for all the astonishing diversity in its wildlife population, Kanha is best known as the habitat of the tiger. Sighting and photographing this magnificent animal from elephant back, is an unforgettable experience. For tiger-tracking, elephants are used.

Excursions: There are several excursion points that you can visit from Kanha. Most of the places are of historical importance. Some of them also make ideal base points to visit some of the popular tourist destinations of Madhya Pradesh. The city of Nagpur which is famous for its orange orchards makes an ideal day or weekend destination from Kanha. Moreover, you can also visit Jabalpur, a small city housing some of the important historical monuments and archaeological findings. Jabalpur is also famous for its highly revered Tilwara ghat where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed in the river here.
