Introduction to Palakkad: The district of Palakkad is known as the granary of Kerala, is a land of valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain streams, dams and irrigation projects. Situated at the foot of the Western Ghats, this is the gateway to Kerala from the north. Palakkad derives its name from the Malayalam words Pala (Alsteria Scholaris) and Kadu (forest) which goes to prove that this place was once a beautiful stretch of forests covered with the sweet scented flowers of the Pala trees.

The Passenger Ropeway: this is the first time of its kind in south India (Accessible to visitors from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm & 2:30 pm to 8:00 pm) .Road train trips in the garden (8 am to 8 pm). Telescope tower (10 am to 5 pm) .Fantasy on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.

Excursions: Trithala About 75km from Palakkad lies the temple town of Trithala. Called Kattilmadom, this Shiva temple structure shows distinct Buddhist influence. Historians date it to 9th or 10th century AD.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary At a distance of 97km from Palakkad lies this tiny sanctuary. Nothing missed if you can't make a trip.

Nelliampathi A little over 75km from Palghat, this valley is thickly forested with Amazonian teak trees. It also has estates of tea, coffee and cardamom.

Silent Valley National Park About 2 hours from Palakkad is this virgin forest that is home to deer and elephants. But make sure you have a letter of permission from the the District Forest Officer in Palakkad.
